Speckled Trout
The speckled trout, as it’s called across south Louisiana, is actually technically called a spotted seatrout. A favorite of recreational fishermen, speckled trout, or “specks” are found in estuaries with varying salinities across Louisiana’s coast. Specks prefer shallow water like shallow bayous, canals and oyster reefs when the weather is warmer and deeper water in estuaries during the cooler months. Specks have an iridescent, gray-colored back and a white underbelly, and their name comes from a spattering of black spots, usually found along their back and tail. Normally, speckled trout are about 1 to 3 pounds, but if you fish in Louisiana, you know they can get a bit larger.
