Job opening: Plaquemines Parish Outreach Coordinator

Description: National Wildlife Federation is currently seeking a Plaquemines Parish Outreach Professional Coordinator. Our campaign advocates for coastal restoration through the implementation of Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan, with the mission of re-connecting the Mississippi River to the delta to protect people, wildlife and jobs. This position will work with coastal parish residents to provide information about sustainable, cost-effective restoration projects based on sound science, and to understand community members’ concerns about the impacts of these projects. This position will be located in New Orleans, La.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Campaign Outreach:

• Plans, develops and executes an education and outreach campaign in Plaquemines Parish focused on coastal restoration tools.
• Collaborates with social media team to support online outreach and to engage leaders in social media content generation and promotion.
• In partnership with the Communications and Science teams, develops education materials on restoration issues relevant to Plaquemines Parish residents.
• Develops and maintains deliverables tracking and contact management systems.

Grasstops:

• Establishes, cultivates and activates a core group of leaders and grasstops supporters.
• Support grasstops presenters by coordinating logistics, supplies, materials and equipment; helps identify speaking opportunities for presenters.
• Help the campaign to quantify success by keeping track of grasstops and grassroots contacts and engagement in the campaign.
• Attends, and recruits partners to attend, public meetings regarding restoration priorities.

Community Engagement and Outreach:

• Recruits and manages community volunteers to support campaign outreach and advocacy efforts.
• Organizes information sessions, events and community dialogues.
• Engages community leaders in earned media opportunities such as letters to the editor, opinion editorials and blog posts.
• Coordinates with field director and state outreach and policy staff to engage community leaders in meetings with local, state and federal decision makers.
• Schedules and performs presentations to community organizations, tabling opportunities at community events, one-on-one meetings with local leaders, and similar outreach tactics.
• Builds partnerships with community organizations and leaders. Attend meetings and events.

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor’s degree, or, equivalent experience required

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience with / knowledge of Louisiana’s coastal issues a plus.
• Three years advocacy or campaign experience or equivalent.

SKILLS:

• Demonstrated success engaging citizens and community leaders in advocacy efforts.
• Strong listening skills and proven ability to respectfully work with community members on controversial issues. Position requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy.
• Strong planning and prioritization skills and ability to work strategically.
• Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with a broad range of constituencies (business interests, young professionals, civic organizations, hunters and anglers, etc.); coalition and partnerships experience preferred.
• Strong written and oral communication skills required.
• Highly proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software applications.
• Experience working with diverse constituencies.
• Ability to work in a team setting and also to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrate initiative and problem solving skills.
• Ability to successfully plan and execute outreach events.

This is a 16-month temporary position with the possibility to extend.
