Restore the Mississippi River Delta Response to Status of the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion

10.22.2024 | In Press Releases

Restore the Mississippi River Delta, a coalition of national and local conservation organizations comprised of the National Wildlife Federation, National Audubon Society, Environmental Defense Fund and the Pontchartrain Conservancy, strongly supports the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion.

Following the correspondence the federal trustee agencies sent to the state in response to the status of the project, the coalition issued the following statement:

“We have been concerned for some time that the current administration was wavering from the state’s longstanding commitment to the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project and the science, transparency, and processes that led to its selection and funding. We are heartened that the federal funding agencies have reminded the state of the obligations it has to complete the project and deliver the benefits it promises to the people of Louisiana. It is our sincere hope that this action by the federal trustees helps get this incredibly important project, that is supported by a majority of Plaquemines Parish residents, back on track. The alternative would be more expensive and less effective, and the people, economy, and ecosystem of the Barataria Basin can’t afford either.”
