The East Bayou Lafourche Marsh Creation project is a Barataria Basin project in the 2023 Coastal Master Plan that will establish more than 33,000 acres of wetland habitat on the eastern side of Bayou Lafourche, along the scenic Caminada Headland. This project will serve multiple essential purposes, including the development of fresh wetland ecosystems, the rehabilitation of deteriorated marshlands and the mitigation of wave erosion.
This project will help to replenish the devastated region still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Ida, which made landfall in 2021 at nearby Port Fourchon with storm surge as high as 14 feet and winds at a sustained speed of 140 mph. The regenerated marshland will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the area against potential storm surge, wave energy and flooding.
Marsh creation projects like this use sediment from the Mississippi River, nearby water bottoms or offshore shoals to build land in shallow open-water areas, typically where land has been lost. The East Bayou Lafourche Marsh Creation Project is located in both Lafourche and Jefferson Parishes, near Port Fourchon, the Caminada Headland and Grand Isle.
Region: Barataria
Parish: Jefferson and Lafourche Parish
CMP ID: 330
Project Type: Marsh Creation
CMP23 Project Description: Creation of marsh within a footprint of approximately 33,000 acres east of Bayou Lafourche and along the Caminada Headland to create new wetland habitat, restore degraded marsh, and reduce wave erosion.
Marsh creation or “dredging” uses sediment from the Mississippi River, nearby water bottoms or offshore shoals to build land in shallow, open water areas, typically where land has been lost. These projects can build land fairly quickly, but will eventually fall victim to the same process that caused the land to disappear originally. This type of project can be used in conjunction with sediment diversions to trap sediment, and sediment diversions can lengthen the lifespan of marsh creation projects by providing a continual source of sediment to the new marsh surface.
